The water in the pool is mixed, so after one change, about 63 % of volume has passed through the filter, not 100 %. The filter has <strong>declared flow<\/strong> and that flow rate is an upper limit, not a recommended operating point. If the pump pushes more than that, the water passes through the sand too quickly and filtration deteriorates.<\/p>\n<p>The measure is <strong>filtration rate<\/strong> in meters per hour. According to data provided by pool-magazin.com, the limit for private pools is <strong>50 m\/h<\/strong>, while DIN 19643 for public freshwater swimming pools requires the highest <strong>30 m\/h<\/strong>, and for sea or salt water 20 m\/h. The quality of the filtrate decreases as the speed increases.<\/p>\n<p>Now take a look at what this means on the filters in our offer. This is not a product defect but the way filters are declared throughout the industry. But it means that the filter that says &quot;9 m\u00b3\/h&quot; on the box works at the upper limit, and not with a reserve.<\/p>\n<p>Velocity calculation: area = \u03c0 \u00d7 (diameter \u00f7 2)\u00b2, velocity = flow \u00f7 area. For D500: \u03c0 \u00d7 0.25\u00b2 = 0.196 m\u00b2, so 9 \u00f7 0.196 = 45.9 m\/h.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flusso-callout flusso-callout--green\" style=\"border-left:4px solid #16a34a;background:#f0fdf4;padding:16px 20px;margin:24px 0;border-radius:4px;\">\n<p style=\"margin:0;\"><strong>Quick win:<\/strong> If you are choosing between two filters and the difference is about a hundred euros, get the bigger one. A larger filter operates at a lower speed at the same flow rate, purifies better, is washed less often, and provides less resistance to the pump. This is the only item in the engine room where \u201coversized\u201d means better. The opposite is true for a pump.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>The pipes set an upper limit that you can&#039;t bypass.<\/h2>\n<p>Even when the pump and filter are matched, the pipe diameter can be a bottleneck. The water velocity in the pipe must not exceed a certain limit, as friction losses, noise and the risk of suction increase beyond this limit.<\/p>\n<p>According to a review by AQUA Magazine, the limits on the suction side are: <strong>6 feet per second<\/strong> (\u22481.83 m\/s) according to the energy standard ANSI\/PHTA\/ICC-15, <strong>8 ft\/s<\/strong> (\u22482.44 m\/s) according to the ISPSC safety standard, while the GENESIS design guideline recommends <strong>5 ft\/s<\/strong> (\u22481.52 m\/s). The suction pipe conservatively leaks about 8.8 m\u00b3\/h. A 16 m\u00b3\/h pump in this installation does not provide 16 m\u00b3\/h \u2014 it creates noise, cavitation and an electricity bill. The pipe diameter is decided before concreting and cannot be changed afterwards without breaking.
